All the little pieces that Nicki Pau Preto leaves for us are just slowly dispersed throughout their POVs, despite the initial info-dumping at the start. I think I preferred Veronyka’s the most, but I really enjoyed how they all mingled and connected various things together as they discovered more about their world and the conflict that brought them all together. I absolutely loved all three of the POVs. Animage’s can communicate with animals which is basically one of my dreams, so it was fun to read about the good and bad things that being an animage brings. Veronyka disguises herself as a boy in order to have the chance to become a Phoenix Rider, but that leads to other issues like a cute romance line in the vein of Tamora Pierce’s Alanna series! Sev is an animage, which was something I really loved about the world. They are all so interesting to read! Tristan is the son of the commander, which is a frustrating position for him. There’s three point of views in this novel: Veronyka, Sev, and Tristan. As much as I love the epic fantasy world that’s in the pages now, it was a bit info-dump-y at the beginning. But! It mellowed out and the world began to expand more organically, which I absolutely loved.

Honestly, when I first started Crown of Feathers, I wasn’t entirely sure it was going to be for me. This is one of those fantasy novels that are worth the slow burn of reading it. When Veronyka strikes out on her own, the only way she can join them is to disguise herself as a boy, but as the lies pile up, she knows it’s only a matter of time before they all come tumbling down around her. Both dream of becoming Phoenix Riders––the legendary warriors who fly phoenixes into battle.Īfter a disastrous war, the surviving Phoenix Riders and their phoenixes have gone into hiding, making it incredibly hard to find them. Nicki Pau Preto crafted a wonderful story full of phoenixes a rich, deep, and tragic history and how it has affected the present and engaging characters who each have their own desires and morals that are illustrated well.Ĭrown of Feathers is a story of Veronyka and Val, two sisters who can’t be more different, even as they’re the same. If you love novels with dragons, you are going to love this one for the phoenixes.

Recommended for readers who love phoenixes and animal magic, epic fantasy, and characters who are conflicted.
